London Heathrow Airport - All Information on London Heathrow Airport (LHR)

Heathrow Airport, previously known as London Airport until 1966, is currently known as London Heathrow (IATA: LHR) and is the primary international airport servicing London, England. Including Gatwick, City, Luton, Stansted, and Southend, it is the largest of London's six international airports. Heathrow Airport Holdings owns and manages the airport. Regarding the number of foreign passengers it serves, it is among the world's busiest airports.

In 1929, a small airport was established at London Heathrow Airport. After World War II, the airport was expanded to its current massive size. Its 13-square-kilometer location puts it 23 kilometers from the heart of London. Over 75 years, it underwent a series of incremental expansions that resulted in the current configuration: two parallel east-west runways, four passenger terminals, and one cargo terminal. British Airways and Virgin Atlantic use this airport as their main hub.

The Heathrow Express, the London Underground, and local buses are all viable options for those looking to get around on the ground. You may also move around London fast and easily using the London Underground. This is the greatest option for visiting places outside central London, as it frequently leaves throughout the day.

However, during rush hours, when lines are slow owing to crowding or engineering maintenance, this approach can be slower than hiring a cab or private hire car due to its underground position. Last but not least, bus services leave and arrive from each terminal at set times daily.

History of London Heathrow Airport

In 1929, a tiny airstrip (Great West Aerodrome) opened on the site now known as London Heathrow Airport, located southeast of the hamlet of Heathrow. Once upon a time, this area was used for agriculture; there was a "Heathrow Farm" located roughly where the current Terminal 2 is now, as well as a "Heathrow Hall" and a "Heathrow House." Heathrow Road, which ran roughly east-southeast across the present-day central terminals area, was the main drag through this settlement.

In 1944, during World War II, construction began on a much larger airport in the Heathrow area. Most military planes flying great distances to the Far East used it. Even though World War II had ended by the time the airfield was finished, the UK government kept expanding it as a civilian airport.

Originally named London Airport, the airport opened to the public on March 25, 1946, and was renamed Heathrow Airport in 1966. Sir Frederick Gibberd conceived of and designed the airport. He drew out plans for the original terminals and structures in the hub area, including the control tower and the St. George's Chapel, which serves people of many faiths.
